His work is defined by thoughtful interpretation, steady leadership, and a focus on communication both on and off the podium.
My approach to conducting is two-fold.
Advanced preparation by the conductor is essential. It is during this process that the score is learned (or relearned), and a clear vision of the composer’s intent is formed.
In rehearsal, beyond providing the orchestra with what they need to play efficiently, musicians must be given the space to hear one another and to perceive the conductor’s vision of the work. The conductor’s role is to unify the orchestra around that vision, so that all are playing with a single voice. In doing so, the conductor, together with the orchestra, brings the music fully to life for the audience.
The 2026 season includes a range of programs that highlight both familiar masterworks and distinctive repertoire. Here are the upcoming concerts Lawrence Eckerling will conduct with the Evanston Symphony Orchestra.
